RIP Doris Day!
The show
never should have happened. Admittedly "not a career minded person,"
Doris had no desire to do a TV show, in fact she was openly hostile to
the idea. She'd been knocking out hit films and hot-selling record albums
at a furious pace for two decades and felt she deserved a break from the
business, maybe even retire altogether. Read

The
Last Days of Bobby Darin
"Regarding
Bobby's reputation for being hard to work with. He was. He had good
days and bad days but for the most part, he treated us (the band)
like gold. We hung together like musketeers and we still talk about
how great those days were." Read

Partridge Family and Brady Bunch at Kings Island theme park 1972-73
King's Island opened to the public on April 29, 1972 and, within 2 years, this Cincinnati, Ohio amusement park was visited by both the Partridge Family and the Brady Bunch. Scenes from those productions offer us a prime look at this quintessential midwestern theme park in its heyday. Read

Video Village & Video Village Jr. Called a “living board game" concept, contestants moved ahead or behind however many squares to win prizes. It was like a walking version of Candyland or Monopoly, there was even a jail. The game board was laid out with three streets: Money Street, Bridge Street and Magic Mile. Read

New
Fall Season - 50 Years Ago
The
1973-74 season had the worst new show success ratio of any season in television
history; the 1974-75 rosters performed only slightly better. Just how different
was TV three decades ago? Just look at what people were watching - it
was the beginning of the end of what is now considered 'classic television.' Read and watch more...

TV's
Wicked Queen! "Paul
Lynde was in the queue in front of a black guy, and Lynde started telling
him he should apply for a job there, and started mouthing off on how lazy
blacks were, etc. Unfortunately for Paul, this particular black man was
a Professor of Sociology at Northwestern, who went straight home and wrote
a strong letter to the press. Lynde went apoplectic with apologies, citing
stress, medication and exhaustion (I seem to remember he blamed anything
except being an alcoholic loudmouth). And,
not long after that, he was dead." Read

TV Stars with Three Hit Shows? You see, all of these performers have achieved something rare in TV, a hat trick. That is: starring in three separate hit series. While we would easily suspect such success from such legends as Lucy (with “I Love Lucy,” “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy”), others who have “three-peated” (and those who haven’t) is a surprising list indeed. Birthday
House
It
might be hard to believe but forty years ago New Yorkers tuned in
every morning to a toddler's birthday party complete with sing-a-longs,
animals and staring into a tropical fish tank. For the time, this
was big city daytime TV at it's finest - and it was surprisingly entertaining. Read

Fridays
For
a brief time in the early 1980s, as the Carter administration gave
way to the Reagan era, Melanie Chartoff, Bruce Mahler, Larry David
and Michael Richards were part of an industrious ensemble on Fridays,
along with Darrow Igus, Mark Blankfield, his wife Brandis Kemp, John
Roarke and Maryedith Burrell. Known primarily for two things - as
a copy of Saturday Night Live and for a riotous appearance
by Andy Kaufman - Fridays was so much more than that. Read

John Wayne in the '50s, '60s, and '70s A
longing look at the legend's last years. His TV appearances,
battles with cancer, his last great films and how the Duke faced
death head on. "On location in Durango, Mexico, he amazed me,"
film producer Hal Wallis stated. "Even though he was functioning
on one lung and had a terrible scar running down his back, he showed
no sign of illness or weakness. He did this own riding, roped in
steers, rounded up cattle, and handled the fight scenes without
a double. Only occasionally, in high country, was he short of breath." Read and watch

Dick
Kallman as Hank "Dick
was stabbed to death in 1980 during
a 'drug induced' robbery - while most of the articles mention he was
murdered in his apartment, it is my belief that he was abducted by
someone on drugs looking for money and forced him back to the apartment...
clearly it was a robbery and a very violent one. I never sat foot
in our apartment again. I left everything I owned in it to be sold.
I could not bear to see it ripped and stained with Dick's blood." Read

1980's
PUNK ROCK
In the early-eighties, young people in Los Angeles were flocking to
makeshift clubs in droves to see new, up and coming bands. Live new
music, not DJs, was what they craved. These writings provide a sketchy
look at the underground club scene in Los Angeles during the time
that groups like X, Missing Persons, The Go-Go's, The Minutemen and
Wall of Voodoo entered the public consciousness. Read
