What to Cook if You’re Ever Invited onto Come Dine With Me

If you’ve happened to switch on your television at any point over the last few years, you’ve definitely caught an episode of Come Dine With Me. A reality television show that pits multiple contestants against each other to see who can host the best dinner party, it specializes in mouth-watering shots of scrumptious cuisine, stomach-churning images of burnt offerings, and lots of riotously bad entertainment.

If, like us, you’ve ever thought about entering the lists yourself, you might have spent some time dreaming up your perfect imaginary menu. Why not check out our make-believe courses below to see whether you’re divinely inspired or think you could do better…

Sticky pear tarts with Roquefort cream
Easy to cook, these sticky pear tarts make the perfect starter. Giving you the chance to provide a preview of your savory main and sweet dessert in one, they combine scrumptious cheesy goodness with the tang of peaches and will get your guests all excited about what’s to come.

For something a little easier, a pear, scallop and chorizo salad can also work. Served warm, it’s quick, simple to make, and ideal for serving up as a starter at dinner parties. It also tastes absolutely delicious with the most minimal amount of effort required.

Butternut, chestnut and lentil cake
Come Dine With Me attracts all sorts of contestants, so if you want to get them on side and boost your scores, you need to serve up something that appeals to as many people as possible. What better way to do that than with a bona fide vegan centerpiece, one that everyone around your table can enjoy? This clever ‘cake’ fits the bill to perfection. A contemporary take on the classic nut roast, it should be served alongside the traditional trimmings for a truly mouthwatering main course.

Baked sole with lemon and caper paste

If you want a little more protein present in your main, then seafood is usually a big success. You need to make something memorable though, so don’t be like everybody else and choose salmon or seabass – go for sole instead. Lemon and Dover both work, and one fish is the perfect size for a single person portion. Add some lemon and caper paste and let your food do the talking.

A big, juicy burger (home-made or store-bought)
If there’s one food that’s universally beloved, it’s the good old hamburger, which is why it can be a really great way to add a modern and massively popular twist to your menu. This staple is an especially exciting option in that it gives you lots of room to experiment. Surf the internet to see what the professionals are selling or, if you feel the need to cheat, you could even check out your local Deliveroo page to see what gourmet American-style goodies can be delivered to your door and passed off as your own. We won’t tell unless you do!

When it comes to dessert, there is only one rule that we recommend when it comes to selecting your menu: make sure it includes plenty of chocolate. Whether you decide to dish up a home-made cheesecake, carefully rolled crepes, or an ice cream extravaganza, sweetness is the key to success.

What would your menu look like?
