Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull The big question I had going into this movie - will George Lucas' input cause Indiana Jones to go the way of the Star Wars sequel/prequels? Sadly, that seems to be the case. Are we really supposed to believe Indy survived a nuclear bomb by riding it out in a refrigerator - and what's with the totally unnecessary aliens subplot? And you can anticipate the whole "Luke, I'm your father" moment coming from the jump. Sure, implausible scenarios are a hallmark of the Lucas / Speilberg franchises but this summer blockbuster quickly lapsed into preposterousness. Still, this is a haunted house movie at heart and works well in that regard. In this Indy film, safety is a water park ride away. The kids are sure to love it and there's enough mindless adventuring and snappy dialogue to satisfy any action movie lover. This may be the weakest of the four films but not by a wide margin. Shia LaBeouf is up to the task of running with Dr. Jones, Cate Blanchett makes for a tasty villain, and the special effects and production design are, naturally, most impressive. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a worthy successor in enough ways to make this movie a must-see for anyone who thrilled to the exploits of America's favorite anthropologist and wants to take that rollicking ride one more time. Besides the film on disc one you get two mini-documentaries, one on the Indiana Jones legacy and the other on how some of the trickier shots were filmed. There is a lengthy, extensive 'making of' feature on disc two (which is optional, a single disc release is available) that dissects every aspect of the production and takes you on location with the filmmakers to show you how it was all accomplished. It's very entertaining, a crash course in movie making. Word is there could be a fifth installment thanks to the overwhelming
box office reaction to this film. I think that's a great idea, especially
if Spielberg can restore the franchise to its former glory - but that
may mean locking George Lucas out of the writers' meetings. Movies on DVD Reviews: |
