DAYTIME TALK SHOWS OF THE 1970s I loved those old afternoon variety shows of the 1970s like Merv, Mike and Dinah. For an hour (or 90 minutes) a day, five days a week, you could see your favorite stars perform and sit down and talk about whatever - their latest projects, the events of the day - these shows weren't nearly as controlled as the chat shows of today. Where else could you get entertainment like this on any random day - William Shatner singing Harry Chapin's 'Taxi' on Dinah Shore's program.
Or this great moment - the great Josephine Baker on Merv's show in 1974. It's audio only but you'll also hear Gloria Swanson on the panel.
You could see the legends of show business in the most informal setting possible. Here's Moe Howard on The Mike Douglas Show talking about his early days in vaudeville and his career as the head Stooge.
Larry Fine of the Three Stooges granted a rare video interview in 1973 when he was residing at the Motion Picture Country Home. Embedding is disabled but it's worth a look. James Brown got down and funky on The Mike Douglas Show in 1971.
Mike Douglas' most famous run of shows have to be the week John Lennon and Yoko One guest co-hosted. Every week Mike had a different co-host but this was a highly unusual choice. John & Yoko agreed to do it so they could reach an audience that they couldn't ordinarily and raise issues not common on daytime TV.
