John Oliver: Las Vegas Is the Worst Place on Earth!by Billy IngramI'll admit it, I'm not a huge fan of Las Vegas, at least not the Vegas of the 21st century. Way too much architectural overkill for my taste, not to mention I'm not a fan of losing money, but I'm fascinated by the desert resort's history, however, and the grand casinos and hotels of the 1960s and '70s. British comic John Oliver shares my dislike of modern day Las Vegas, apparently. "I had a near religious moment of revelation at the end of last year, I went to Las Vegas for the first time. And I've not been to every place on Earth, I should say that now. In the interest of full disclosure, I've not been to every place on this planet and yet I'm pretty sure Las Vegas is the worst place on it. It's just an inherit, deep, profound belief and yet something incredible did happen. "It was about 4:30 in the morning, I was sitting in the casino at a Blackjack table, trying to pretend to myself and everyone around me that I understood what we were all doing. 'He's got the picture card again, look at that, I wonder if he's going to be happy like last time he got a picture card. He's not as happy this time, is it he got the lady card this time? Did he not want the lady card, did he want the old man card like the picture card he got last time? It doesn't matter that he lost, it's just fun isn't it, we're here to have fun.'" One of the funniest comedians of our modern age, Oliver goes on with his story in the clip below...
John Oliver isn't the only well-know person who's sour on the Strip. No one knows exactly who said, "If you aim to leave Las Vegas with a small fortune, go there with a large one" but Frank Sinatra once quipped, "Las Vegas is the only place I know where money really talks - it says Goodbye." Of course, Vegas was Sinatra's bread and butter (one of many), he made millions performing there - and probably lost a fortune or two along the way. Don Rickles was another entertainer who struck it rich playing the Strip but had this to say about betting, "My father was an insurance man and a small-time gambler. He was a good man, but he had an eye for the racehorses, and I saw how it used to bother my mother. I've never gambled a dime. Never, in all those years in Vegas." Dennis Rodman complained, "I lost $35,000 in less than a week at the Mirage in Las Vegas." Then there's J. R. Moehringer who said, "While I was busy hating Vegas and hiding from Vegas, a funny thing happened. I grew to love Vegas." Beats Peoria I guess! |
"I hate Disneyland. It primes our kids for Las Vegas." - Tom Waits
