Was the 1959 Santa Claus Movie Too Christian?!?Uh, no… not if you portray Santa ( Saint Nicholaus of Bari) as one who embraces Christian traditions like Nativity scenes. He even asked permission to deliver goodies to Saint Mary and Saint Joseph. Jesus was mentioned, the plot was centered around the devil trying to thwart the holiday. In the '50s, a juxstaposition of Santa with mainstream Christianity made a lot of sense. Santa, over the decades, has pretty much become divorced from the life and death of Jesus, evolving into a more secular character, which I guess he was all along. This movie has a bit of a weirdo, creepy vide but everything in the 1950s was harsher than modern times. Here’s the movie in its entirety, judge for yourself. Baby Boomers might remember watching this movie on television in the sixties.
