TV Pow!

TV Pow! was played on local kid shows across the country in the late-1970s / early-1980s; it was done with a modified Fairchild System F system equipped with simple games like Space Battle and Intellivision Football that were displayed on the TV screen for all to see.

Contestants would phone into the station and, if they were the lucky caller, 'play' a video game live by yelling "Pow!" when they wanted the guy at the controls to shoot. Mostly it consisted of kids screaming, "Pow!pow!pow!pow!" continuously and indiscriminately. Still, this feature was much loved by kids, stoned teens and hyped-up college kids.

Someone posted a clip of someone playing TV Pow! (or TV Powww!) from Barney's Army in 1982, this was the last installment of TV Pow! on the show hence the added sturm und drang.

Here's the opening for TV Powww! with Cap'n Mitch from 3/31/80.

Kevin Butler writes: Yes! I remember"TV Pow." During the late 1970s and early 1980s NYC based TV station WPIX 11 aired the game between reruns of old TV cartoons and old movie comedies - although the game was called "TV PIXX." Along with kid(s) at home playing the game the booth announcer (oft times Mr. Bill Biery, better remembered as "Beachcomber Bill") would ask the kid at home if he or she knew "The TV PIXX Magic Word Of The Day" and he would also ask "Who the TV PIXX Pal Of The day" was. If the kid at home guessed correctly he/she won a lot of great toys and other prizes (this is something that I'm sure really ticked off that miserable kid's TV bigot Mrs. Peggy Charren of The ACT). The game ended and within a few years WPIX TV stopped airing reruns of the old cartoons and film comedies altogether. It was our loss.
