Let’s trip the cathode light fantastic to return to the year 1999 for enjoying some long-ago TV Christmas moments from that final year of the 20th century! In 1999, Donny & Marie Osmond’s career as weekly primetime variety hour performers were long past. Because everyone got a talk show in the nineties, Donny & Marie reemerged in 1998 in a daily talk format. For their holiday episode airing 12/24/1999, the entire Osmond family join the duo to perform musical numbers - just like on their 1970s ABC variety shows, only with more talking. The Donny & Marie talk program wasn’t well received and ended after two seasons.
Also on Christmas Eve, a gaudy holiday themed episode of The Price is Right aired on CBS with host Bob Barker and announcer Rod Roddy. This was the last holiday with Barker’s Beauties Janice and Kathleen. This episode was taped on Bob's 76th birthday - 12 days earlier.
What might someone be doing on Christmas Eve in 1999? Cooking a ham perhaps? So you know you want to watch Aretha Franklin ban a ham with Martha Stewart. Right?
The Three Tenors were really hot in 1999, naturally they starred in a yuletide special, a musical hour and a half filmed in Austria. This aired the night before Christmas Eve. Pavarotti, Carreras, and Domingo were in top form here.
Binge watching commercial breaks from 1998 and 1999 can really put you in a nostalgic Christmas funk. Commercials were culled from Touched by An Angel, a TV movie Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years, King of the Hill, The PJs, Diagnosis Murder, and the Wonderful World of Disney.
