PROGRAM
PROFILE: Gary Collins starred as Dr. Michael Rhodes, college professor with a fascination for the paranormal. This was an anthology of sorts, with different people who were being haunted by unexplained phenomenon. First year opening titles:
Acclaimed science fiction author Harlan Ellison was a story editor for the first season and many of the storylines were quite effective, if a bit slow. This series was a mid-season replacement for ABC, debuting in January 1972 with this episode:
When the show returned for one last season, Dr. Rhodes was suddenly using his powers of ESP, becoming more super-heroic while the plots became even more incredible, this in an utterly unsuccessful attempt to attract a wider audience. Second Season open:
Screen legend Joan Crawford played her last television role in the September 30th episode from the second season of The Sixth Sense, "Dear Joan, We're Going To Scare You To Death." The Sixth Sense was removed from ABC's lineup in December of 1972. Episodes of Sixth Sense were added to the Night Gallery syndication package during the 1970s & 1980s. Gary Collins went on to host PM Magazine in the late-1970s. Here's a rarely seen ending tag to the Joan Crawford episode 'Joan We're Going to Scare You to Death' with the legendary actress talking about her experience with ESP.
