Games based on classic TV series

There’s been plenty of media discussion lately over claims that the gaming sector is overtaking the movie business in terms of both revenue and popularity as a modern-day leisure pursuit. Perhaps that is partly down to the technology maturing along with the gamers – in other words, those who grew up with gaming from the 80s onwards have seen no reason to drop it as the years have gone by.

One thing that has remained unchanged about gaming from those earliest years is that as well as appropriating the audiences from the movie theaters, it is also taking plenty of ideas from Hollywood. These range from classics like Goldeneye, where the game is arguably better than the movie, to lemons like ET, where the cartridges literally ended up in landfill. Yet it is not just the big screen that serves as inspiration for the game designers. Did you know these TV classics have their very own games, too?

Dallas

Back in the days of the Atari 8-bit Commodore 64, the world’s most popular family drama was turned into a text adventure by Datasoft. At the time, it was praised as one of the best games of its kind, and the player assumes the role of a detective sent out to South America by the Ewings to find hidden oil reserves.

Modern gamers would probably lack the patience to make it all the way through the adventure, but that is more of a reflection on them than the game. Attention to detail is rewarded, as every conversation or innocuous object holds a clue.

Planet of the Apes

Between the increasingly convoluted sequences of movies, the Planet of the Apes TV series was essential viewing in the 1970s. This formed the inspiration for NetEnt’s visually stunning Planet of the Apes slot game that can be played on a whole range of online casino gaming sites.

The dual-screen layout makes this one stand out from other games of its type, and there are a host of bonus features such as wilds and scatters. It’s a great way to revisit a classic series and you can either play it for fun or wager real money.

Grey’s Anatomy

While Planet of the Apes is a show that clearly lends itself to gaming, this medical drama might come as a little more of a surprise. You can take control of several familiar cast members and guide them through the complexities of their personal lives as well as getting hands-on in the operating room.

The game is surprisingly addictive, and you will literally find yourself drawn into Dr Grey’s world.  Released in 2009, it’s still widely available on Windows, Wii and Nintento DS.

Desperate Housewives

It’s another that might not seem an obvious choice as inspiration for a video game, but this SIMS-style adaptation for Windows works well and sticks closer to the source material than any of the other games we have discussed. Perhaps that’s because the plot was written by series writer Scott Sanford Tobis.

You adopt the character of a new housewife on Wisteria Lane and must build a life while negotiating the typical Desperate Housewives-style intrigues, infidelities and dark secrets.
