Ricky Gervais' Cruel But Funny 2020 Golden Globe Opening!
For a 5th time, NBC invited Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Globe Awards show (the 77th yearly event) and once again the comedian roasted the Hollywood elite as the stars in attendance sat uncomfortably as they were being skewered on live television.
“Apple roared into the TV game with ‘The Morning Show,’ a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China. Well, you say you’re ‘woke’ but the companies you work for in China - Unbelievable - Apple, Amazon, Disney.
"If ISIS started a streaming service you’d call your agent, wouldn’t you? So, if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech.
You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God, and f**k off, OK?”
Gervais then mocked the stars in attendance for their relation to the late sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein. Gervais declared that Epstein didn't kill himself, prompting groans from the crowd. "Shut up, I know he’s your friend but I don’t care."
The host also referred to Joe Pesci as "Baby Yoda." Then there was this zinger: "You all look lovely all dolled up, you came here in your limos. I came here in a limo and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman," he said to the crowd as they cringed and groaned. "It’s her daughter I feel sorry for. That must be the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to her. And her dad was in 'Wild Hogs,' so..."
When he made this quip about "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", "Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere and, by the end, his date was too old for him," DiCaprio actually laughed. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” was awarded the Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy after the film's director and writer, Quentin Tarantino, brought home the award for Best Screenplay.
