Star Trek cast on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow, 1976

Tom Snyder was one of late night TV’s best interviewers. On this 1976 episode of Tomorrow on NBC he’s joined by DeForrest Kelley, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan from Star Trek which had become an unexpected phenomenon in syndication, far surpassing and success the show had in primetime on NBC from 1966-1969.

By 1976 Star Trek conventions were popping up all over the country attracting tens of thousands of fans. These conventions allowed the actors, many of whom were having a hard time getting roles on other shows because of type casting, could make a living signing autographs. The first Star Trek convention was in 1972.

The Trek cast members are joined in part 4 by the brilliant writer Harlan Ellison who penned what’s considered to be the finest written episode of Star Trek, ‘City On the Edge of Forever.’ That script won a Hugo award, when Ellison accepted the award, he said he was dedicating the award to “the memory of the script they butchered, and in respect to those parts of it that had the vitality to shine through the evisceration.”

Ellison discusses the first attempt at a Star Trek movie script due to the late in life success of the TV series.

Ellison once famously said, “Call me a science fiction writer, I’ll come to your house and I’ll nail your pet’s head to a coffee table. I’ll hit you so hard your ancestors will die.”
