Man from U.N.C.L.E. The Man From U.N.C.L.E.: The Complete Second Season has arrived on DVD and it's splendid to see this seminal action series from the 1960s looking and sounding so spectacular. This is representative of the best TV had to offer in the Golden Age of the super sixties. This was the first color season for U.N.C.L.E., coming on the heels of a thrilling first season, there had been nothing like it on TV before, a clever mix of adventure and humor that made this show an instant cult classic. Midway through this 1965-66 season ABC debuted Batman and the country went Bat-crazy, suddenly shows like Lost in Space and Man From U.N.C.L.E. were told to camp it up. That resulted in way too much silliness (especially on Lost in Space) but this series retained much of its dignity, especially the first half of season 2. This year was the most popular and one most fans remember most fondly. The main problem with this season was the ever changing roster of producers sending the show in different directions. If you were to buy only one season of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. I would recommend either season 1 or 2, depending on whether color is deciding a factor for you (season 1 was in black and white and superior in many ways). Season 2 begins with a terrific two-parter featuring Rip Torn as the villain, this was so the studio could combine these episodes for a feature length motion picture. The first of 3 Man From U.N.C.L.E. movies released in this fashion. You get 30 episodes on 10 discs in this DVD set with some of the best episodes of the series with guest stars that include: Vincent Price, Angela Lansbury, Martin Landau, Eve Arden, Roger C. Carmel, Judy Carne, Jay North and many other 1960s mainstays. From Amazon's review: In this hit spoof on the spy genre, Robert Vaughn (Hustle) and David McCallum (Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service) star as a team of secret agents (one American, one Russian) battling together against the global crime organization THRUSH. Under the aegis of the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.), the dapper, suave Napoleon Solo (Vaughn) and the equally dashing Illya Kuryakin (McCallum) jet to exotic locations, defending the world from evil, chaos and bad taste. Season two finds our spy heroes -- and their boss, Alexander Waverly (Leo G. Carroll) -- smack in the middle of the swinging sixties. Featuring full-color episodes of tongue-in-cheek banter and imaginative action scenes -- such as a choir of 8-year-olds turned into assassins or a pack of radioactive bats programmed to short-circuit the world. Long before spy shows were cool, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was cool. Best episodes of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
