LIST-O-MANIA by Lypsinka What is it about lists? There's the 100 greatest American films list. Then there's Modern Library's 100 greatest modern novels. And let's not forget Monica Lewinsky's unheeded laundry list. Perhaps here at the beginning of the millennium, lists represent a subconscious desire to sum up, to reflect on our cultural past. So, who am I to not join in? After all, I, The Fabulous Lypsinka, am The (Self-Anointed) Official Celebrity of The New Millennium! Therefore, at TVParty.com's thoughtful request here is my extremely biased list of the 20th century's ten greatest television moments. Maybe some of you will agree. 1. Vivian Vance's rendition of I'm Lily of the Valley, complete with red-hot-mama coda, in the operetta episode of 'I Love Lucy' - never fails to put a smile on my face. 2. Tallulah Bankhead as the villainous Black Widow on the mid-1960's 'Batman', garbling her lines and dragging her mink coat on the ground, cannot be topped. 3. The 'Models Amalgamated' scenes in the May 1995 Martin Short Special, parodying 'Models, Inc'. Airing in the Saturday Night Live slot, it contained the most satisfying sketch comedy performances ever. Short appears as 2 characters: Lettie Hale (patterned after Bette Davis) and a vapid male model; and the brilliant Jan Hooks pops up in 3 roles - including Faye Dunaway and an insipid 90's bimbo who utters the immortal line, "Brittany, don't go there!". 4. Pee-wee's Playhouse: the most subversive, smartest show of the 80s. 5. The Carol Burnett Show: the Joan Crawford parody Torchy Song, Harvey Korman as the Jewish yenta from next door on 'As The Stomach Turns', and Carol, Lena Horne and Marilyn Horne sing Sondheim's "You Could Drive A Person Crazy". (Did I dream that last one?!) 6. Virginia Graham's 'Girl Talk'. Enough said. The divine Virginia once came backstage to see me after a performance and said, This show is so great even Helen Keller would love it! 7. Anything Lily Tomlin has ever done. Personal fave: Bobbi Jeannene, the airport lounge organist. 8. Jacqueline Susann on Hollywood Squares. I don't remember this appearance, but I'm thrilled to know it happened! 9. Leslie Uggams' desperate, messy attempt to cover up the fact she doesn't know the lyrics to "June Is Busting Out All Over" on a recent, lousy major network 4th of July spectacular is always a party pleaser. 10. The 1968 Academy Awards telecast, the year 'Oliver!' won for Best Picture, prompted an enormous show-biz endorphins high from which I've never recovered. Honorable mention: Karen Morrow's rendition of "I Had A Ball" on 'The Ed Sullivan Show', Dolores Gray and Kay Thompson together on 'The Milton Berle Buick Show', Mitzi Gaynor dancing to "Turkey Lurkey Time" on one of her silly specials, Lucy as Margo the interior decorator on 'The Lucy Show', Judy Garland's Christmas show (Liza's "beau!"), Pernell Roberts on 'Bonanza' (meow!) and all the girls on Laugh-In dressed as Tiny Tim, complete with ukulele, singing "What's the news across the nation".
