Christmas on TV - 1988 Elsewhere in this mega-Christmas section of TVparty!, we’ve profiled years past at Christmastime but 1988 was the year just about everybody owned a home video camera. As a result, the internet is littered with families’ footage of the young ones celebrating the holiday that year. Indulge if you must but we're going in a different direct... 1988 was the year Ernest Saves Christmas debuted in movie theaters - along with Die Hard and Scrooged. Let’s look at what was airing on TV in 1988 during the Holiday season! A Very Brady Christmas brought TV’s first family of the 70s back for another round of heartwarming hijinks. There seems to always be one holdout among the cast, this time it was Susan Olsen (Cindy Brady) who happened to be on her honeymoon in real life. One of the highest rated TV movies of the season.
Steve Martin made a hilarious - but weird - appearance on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show in 1988. He was on to promote Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in theaters. If you haven’t seen that movie you must! Great holiday viewing. Steve Martin sits on Santa's lap and makes a surprising confession on December 14, 1988.
Chicagoans will especially enjoy these commercial breaks from Channel 9 WGN: Here’s a much loved one-hour TV special that aired on December 19, 1988 - John Denver Christmas in Aspen.
