More Great Moments from 1970's Variety Shows!
(Music and comedy from the Polyester decade)
Television has changed greatly since the 1970s. In one major way especially - there are no more variety shows, a genre that flourished from the late-1940s until the mid-1970s on TV. It was an opportunity to see the greatest stars of the big and small screens in a less that formal setting. Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In got underway in the 1960s but was still popular as the 1970s rolled around. Here screen legend Greer Garson joins in the fun. This show started at the very top of the ratings during 1969-1970 season but started to slide after that, from #13 in 1970-71 to cancellation in 1973.
Jim Nabors quit his top ten hit Gomer Pyle in 1969 to do what he really wanted to do - star in a variety show. The series lasted two seasons. From 1970 here's a young Jackson 5 when they performed their hits on the show.
Tony Orlando & Dawn tried to recreate the magic of Sonny & Cher and didn't do too badly, a three year run. Here the Mary Tyler Moore Show's Ted Knight clowns with the ladies of Dawn.
Who can forget Hee Haw - a surprise hit that ran for decades even after CBS cancelled the show.
Bette Midler had her own spectacular one hour NBC special in 1976 (Old Red Hair Is Back) and she also appeared on quite a few variety specials hosted by others - here's Bette Midler with the Mills Brothers from a 1975 Bing Crosby show.
