More Great Moments from 1970's Variety Shows!
(Music and comedy from the Polyester decade)
The Carol Burnett Show had a bunch of great sketches that became recurring skits that used to put me on the floor with laughter. Can you believe it's been 30 years since the show went off the air? Here's Carol and Tim Conway as Mr. Tudball with his ditzy secretary Mrs. Wiggins in one of the earlier sketches.
One of the great things about the Tonight show with Johnny Carson was the frequent use of guest hosts when Johnny took a night off. A world of stars subbed for Carson during the polyester decade - The Smothers Brothers, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, Don Rickles, the list is a long one. Here's the opening of a Tonight show from 1978 with Don Rickles hosting.
Glen Campbell doesn't get the props he deserves, IMHO, for the terrific variety show he hosted in the early-1970s, a program initially produced by Tom Smothers. In the first year or two Mason Williams and John Hartford were on staff; the Campbell show boasted the best comedy and musical talent in television at the time. There's been a 'best-of' musical numbers release on DVD that I highly recommend but it's just a whet for the whistle. Thanks to You Tube we can see a bit more - but not much! Here's David Cassidy and Glen doing a medley of teen hits from years earlier.
From the DVD, Cher and Glen sing the lady's top 40 solo hit from the 1960s 'All I Really Want To Do' written by Bob Dylan with a jazzy arrangement I always liked but I'll bet the songwriter hated.
When I want to laugh across the You Tubes I often find myself going to clips from The Carol Burnett Show. One of the funniest recurring skits has Carol as the dimwitted Mrs. Wiggins and Tim Conway as Mr. Tudball. I wonder how much of this Conway improv-ed?
Enjoy Dom DeLuise and Orson Welles as the recreate a famous British comedy routine from the At Last the 1948 Show originally performed by Marty Feldman and Tim Brooke Taylor. This is from The Dean Martin Show.
Remember The Jackson's 1970's variety series? Not many people do, it debuted in the summer of 1976 and did well enough to return in the spring of 1977. It fizzled in the ratings that time and was quickly gone for good. Here's the opening for a second year show.
