NEW SHOW REVIEW
Chef Gordon RamsayHell's Kitchen
fires up for a fourth season and, after a clever opening twist, serves up a mess of ruthless, feckless food divas to vie for the opportunity to become executive chef at Chef Ramsay's new upscale restaurant in Los Angeles.

The incredibly acerbic superstar Chef has turned the heat up this season, watching this program is like reliving your worst day at the most horrible job ever. I've actually worked in environments like this, as an artist, so it's cathartic in a way to observe from afar Ramsay's screaming and yelling fits tempered with his patented faux outrage.

Chef RamsayIf you haven't seen Hell's Kitchen, it's an elimination contest; for episode one it's the mostly misogynous males vs the contentious females and both teams take a humiliating verbal beating while Chef Ramsay flings dishes into the air and viciously lashes out at everyone in sight. Why anyone would actually want to subject themselves to this kind of behavior is beyond me but I love watching the chaos that ensues.

You simply won't believe what some of these so-called professional chefs offer up when asked to prepare their signature dishes. One disastrous combination plate sends Chef Ramsay barfing into a trash can - and wait until you see another contestant's Cornish Hen stuffed in a pumpkin.

Hell's Kitchen is gotcha TV at its best, it works so well because of Ramsay's saucy expletives, his horribly degrading putdowns. Like all 'reality' shows there's a healthy measure of artificial drama to compliment the extra crispy editing but, with some interesting characters to work with, Hell's Kitchen should dish out plenty of entertaining moments this season.

Hell's Kitchen is an actual working restaurant, at least while the program is in production, wouldn't it be great to eat there sometime if only for the theater? Not that the patrons on show one got much food, most of it ended up in the trash or on the wall.

It's interesting to note how much more patient and respectful Chef Ramsay is on the British version of Kitchen Nightmares, another program he's successfully transplanted on Fox. The gloves are off on Hell's Kitchen; he refers to one contestant as a "toilet brush," another is called a "donkey," while everyone is deemed, "useless f*cking pieces of sh*t."

With this series and the even better Kitchen Nightmares, Chef Ramsay has positioned himself as one of America's most incandescent personalities with two of the best 'reality' shows on TV today.

Hell's Kitchen returns April 1st at 9:00pm ET / CT on FOX.

Jay Blotcher notes: "It appears Disney will be the next big studio to mine its vault of classic TV shows, based on remarks made by CEO Bog Iger at the company's annual shareholder's meeting last week. The shows could appear on Disney.com for free or as part of a subscription model."

TV BlogDawn Wells plead guilty to possession of marijuana after being arrested in October. A surprise birthday party for Dawn Wells, the actress who played Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," ended with a nearly three-hour tour of the Teton County sheriff's office and jail when the 69-year-old was caught with marijuana in her vehicle while driving home.

Captain Kngaroo / TV Blog
Here's a quaint video clip from the TVparty book CD-Rom - a nicely animated public service spot that ran on the Captain Kangaroo show - along with the original program bumpers. Sadly, there are almost no existing copies of the entire CBS run of Captain Kangaroo.

SUNDAY YOU TUBING
TV BlogPoor NBC. Stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to promoting Conan O'Brien in 2009 to host the already number one rated late night program, the Tonight show with Jay Leno. Kind of makes their painful negotiations with Johnny Carson every few years seem like a happy memory. In that spirit, lets look at a few of Carson's best moments thanks to the Tube...

On October 14, 1982 Johnny discussed his drunk driving arrest the weekend before. Was there any situation he couldn't handle with style and good humor?

Johnny was so good with plain regular folks, this is one of my favorite Tonight show segments, Myrtle Young and her potato chip collection.

An absolutely hilarious Smothers Brothers appearance in a 1992 show. The Smothers actually hosted the Tonight show in 1975.

May 13th 1994 Johnny Carson made a surprise appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. It was Johnny Carson's last appearance on television.

TV SHOW REVIEW
TV BlogLi'l Bush, Comedy Central's animated look at Washington insiders, returns on Thursday, March 13th at 10:00pm.

Mostly a pastiche of cheap shots and bad jokes, L'il Bush seems a perfect metaphor when you consider the childishness that prevails in our nation's capital but the laughs here are few and far between. I think the glow is off this rose, it's awfully hard to parody what is already so outrageously pathetic. Let's face it, Bush and his cronies just ain't funny anymore. If they ever were.

MORE ON THE GOLDBERGS
Bob Huggins adds this: "In your blog comments about “The Goldbergs,” I saw mention of the “Joe Palooka” series. A single, solitary episode of that series has been released on commercial DVD by Alpha Video.

"I was able to access UCLA’s on-line library catalog and was able to get the following information about the university’s holdings of “The Goldbergs.” If my math is correct, here’s what they have:

1949: Two CBS programs, one from August, the other from October
1954: Twenty two episodes that were broadcast on the DuMont Network from May to October of 1954
1955-56: Thirty nine filmed episodes for Guild Films

"Here’s the link to the research page (there are a few radio recordings at the beginning."

NEW TO DVD
The Goldbergs on DVDBob Huggins writes: "Here’s another rare-to-see show that Timeless Media is releasing on April 15th - “The Goldbergs.” The two DVD set will contain 10 episodes. I’ll hazard a guess and say that the episodes are probably from the show’s final season as that was the only season that was produced on film, but perhaps some kinescopes from the show’s earlier seasons still survive."

This should be popular, you have no idea how many people have been requesting The Goldbergs on DVD and Timeless does a great job of providing the best possible quality for the lowest price.

Unless he died recently, Cherney Berg, who co-wrote the show with his mother Gertrude Berg, is still around and has a large number of earlier episodes, as does the UCLA TV archives, if I'm not mistaken.

Film Collector Jeff Valencia mentioned this to me a decade ago, here's what he said about the history of the shows - "Talk about lost shows, get this - when Guild Films in NY went bankrupt the negatives to the Goldberg shows (along with others like The Joe Palooka Story) were placed in a bank vault. Time passed and now all the 35mm negatives are lost. The only copies of the last season are with UCLA. Cherney Berg had a complete set in 16mm and I had about 18 shows in 16mm. The first 6 years of the show were live and the network contract stipulated that they destroy the kinescope recordings after 90 days. So there are only a handful of live Goldbergs."

The Goldbergs is only $7.98 and will be released April 15th and can be pre-ordered here.
