Beatles
Unseen Beatles is a sparkling look at the group during the years 1962-65 when the four musicians - and our respective countries - were vastly more naive. This hour-long BBC documentary contains footage never before seen of the Fab Four, mostly consisting of 8mm film shot by fans. Though hardly breathtaking footage, this program uses these brief, intimate moments captured on film to offer up a unique perspective of these ultimate icons and the result is truly revelatory. From the product description: By 1966 the Beatles had played over 1400 gigs, released 15 Number 1 singles, made 7 albums, toured the world 4 times and sold the equivalent of 200 million records. At the height of their popularity, without warning, they pulled the plug. They would never tour again. Previously unseen archive footage, photographs, personal home movies and interviews with those who accompanied the Beatles on tour tell the inside story of Beatlemania, its rise and fall. Touching and intimate, it's a story of chaos and comedy, of death threats, plane crashes, diplomatic wrangles, and ultimately disillusionment. If you weren't around at the time (it was a bit before my era) and are curious about the origins of Beatlemania, this makes a fine primer. Even better are the extended interviews included as a bonus where key individuals who were close to the Beatles and folks who toured with them share some amazing stories, including several near death experiences. Of course, if you're a rabid fan of the early Beatles this DVD is a must have; you're likely to learn things you didn't know, the scratchy 1960's color footage vividly shows you just how happy these guys were when they started to make it big. It all adds up to a fascinating behind the scenes glimpse at the greatest musical group of all time and the triumphs and terrors that went along with being - for a time at least - more popular than Jesus. Despite being bombarded by Beatles trivia my entire life I came away with a fresh perspective on John, Paul, George and Ringo. One caveat - there isn't one note of Beatles music in this documentary - too expensive. TV on DVD Reviews: |
