This lavish DVD collection is a Paul Brownstein production, enthusiasts will recognize him as the guy behind so many award winning DVD sets - The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, I Love Lucy, Sgt. Bilko, the Gunsmoke 50th Anniversary Collections and so many other magnificent products. I believe he's topped them all with this collection, it's first class all the way, no wonder it won the 2007 DVD Critics Award for Best TV Series. Created by Mel Brooks with Buck Henry, Get Smart is genuinely hilarious, one of the great sitcoms of all time. Formulaic to the extreme, I loved this show as a kid and haven't seen a moment of it since. That said, I'm surprised at how memorable many of the scenes are, I remember them like it was yesterday. Of course, there were many catch phrases that emanated from this show - "Would you believe...," "Missed it by that much," "Sorry about that Chief" and more. The evolution of Get Smart is interesting. NBC had so many hit shows in 1969 that they cancelled Get Smart after a four year run, even though it was doing OK in the ratings. CBS snatched it up and the show aired for one additional season. During that period Max and 99, now married, gave birth to a twins. The show ran out of steam during that final year, the same jokes and setups had worn thin by then and adding a baby was a cheap ratings gimmick that fizzled. While not the best year in my opinion, there are others who like the later shows best for their looseness and overall zaniness. It's just amazing how sharp and brilliant Get Smart looks in this DVD collection. This series was produced during the early days of color TV so everything was color saturated, a joy to behold. The 138 episodes on 25 DVDs come enveloped in an intricate box that incorporates elements from the show's opening, a beautifully designed package inside and out. The DVD's graphic interface is retro-rific. And the bonus features - holy moley, what amazing extras this DVD set comes with! There's an audio intro by series star Barbara Feldon for each episode (that's something Brownstein does for many of the DVD collections he oversees) and every season set is packed with bloopers, Emmy Award telecast excerpts and Don Adams' variety show appearances from the period. That's in addition to the many featurettes, promos, and extended interviews with Bruce Bilson, Barbara Feldon and Buck Henry. There are some wonderful episode commentaries by Buck Henry, Don Rickles, Barbara Feldon, Leonard Stern, Mel Brooks, Bernie Koppell, and James Caan. You even get to watch the pilot with two separate commentaries from Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. And one of the most remarkable features is video of Don Adams' star studded memorial service. How incredible is that? Get Smart is available from Time-Life in a deluxe 5 season box set or you can purchase season one separately. Either way you are in for a treat! Get Smart: Season 1 It's the hit first season, digitally restored, remastered and brought to you for the first time on DVD!
