The Waltons - Season 4
The fourth season of The Waltons is out on DVD and it's a hot seller according to Amazon - as I'm writing this it's the 27th best selling DVD in their catalog.
And why not? It's a sign that quality productions never go out of style. Besides that, there are plenty of parents who want their kids to grow up with wholesome TV entertainment, just like they did.
The fact that a show like this existed at all in 1975 - a simple story of a 1930's mountain family unpolluted by explosions, fast cars, loose women and jiggling body parts - was considered a minor miracle. No critic gave the production a chance in Hell of surviving when The Waltons debuted in 1972 but the show shot into the top five by the second season (with almost 30% of all TVs tuned in each week) and stayed in the top ten or twenty for the next four seasons.
The reason for that success had a lot to do with the fact that The Waltons was produced and often written by Earl Hamner, who wrote many of the finest dramas of the early days of TV including many classic episodes of The Twilight Zone. Hamner was also the narrator on The Waltons and wrote the story for the 2006 acclaimed movie version of Charlotte's Web.
That and the superior cast is what made The Waltons so special to its legions of fans and this fourth season is the best of the series run in the minds of many devotees (John Boy left during the 5th season, the series ran for a total of 9 years).
This collection contains all 24 episodes on five double-sided discs - less than $27.00 from Amazon with no sales tax and free shipping!
