The Jewish Americans

The tumultuous 350 year history of Jewish life in America is explored in this terrific new documentary series written & directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Grubin.

The Jewish Americans is a rich, expansive tapestry woven from many tales - the creation of Superman by two teen cartoonists; the effect Hitler had over American politics; radio and TV pioneer Gertrude Berg; the horrifying story of a Jewish businessman Leo Frank who was framed for murder down South leading to the Ku Klux Klan; the emergence of the Jewish community in Los Angeles; the civil rights movements of the 1960s; the origins of the Zionist movement here in the US; the catskills comics; the founding of Israel; Bess Myerson becoming Miss America, and so many other fascinating stories.

Sid Caesar, Tony Kushner, Carl Reiner, Jerry Stiller, Jules, Feiffer, along with lesser known but equally eloquent Jewish leaders and historians are interviewed. While not as always as gripping as some other PBS documentaries it's immanently watchable throughout, at times heartbreaking, at others uplifting.

This 6 hour epic (3 episodes) comes on 2 DVDs along with extras - Jewish cooking with Gil Marks, Rosh Ashanah Ceremonial scene and an interview with the filmmaker.
