ON DVD:
Season three of The Muppet Show has finally arrived on DVD, digitally restored, looking and sounding like new. One of the most colorful variety shows of the 1970s, The Muppet Show really holds up over the ages, a star-studded spectacular that lights up the screen with musical comedy magic from the genius of Jim Henson and Frank Oz. Look for Rita Coolidge and Kris Kristofferson in their Sonny & Cher faze, Leo Sayer at his disco worst, Gilda Radner at her comedic best, the astonishing Pearl Bailey, a ridiculous Alice Cooper performing 'Welcome To My Nightmare' and 'School's Out,' Loretta Lynn, Harry Belafonte, the last variety show performance of Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, Liberace, and dozens of the top celebrities at that time. The Lynn Redgrave episode is a too clever, show-long musical adaptation of Robin Hood and the legendary Spike Milligan (Goon Show) is brilliant in his tour-de-farce. That's what made The Muppet Show so special - the range of talent featured, from every aspect of the performing arts - from Opera, Rock, Broadway, comedy, pop stars, and occasionally some obscure favorites like Spike Milligan. Most of these performers were at their peak in 1978 when these shows aired; of course, if you watch with your kids, you'll have to explain to them who these people were! Then there are the regular bits - Pigs in Space, Veterinarian Hospital, the Tin Pan Alley routines, the weird musical juxtapositions, nonsensical Broadway medleys, Bear on Patrol, Swedish Chef, and the most bizarre setups for guest star musical numbers ever - even Big Bird puts in an appearance in the Leslie Uggams episode. It's hit
and miss, as variety shows are, some routines gel and some are just plain
silly but every episode is sparkling This very attractive DVD set contains all 24 episodes of The Muppet Show's third season along with some nice bonus features as well, the coolest being The Muppets on Puppets, an in-depth, 60-minute documentary from 1968 which aired on pre-PBS Educational TV. Truly a must for Muppet fans. There's also a new behind the scenes look at the puppeteers and vintage commercials from the early-1960s. (The extras are on Disc 4 if you're Netflixing this one.) All in all, a terrifically entertaining four disc DVD collection suitable for the entire family, one that will can be treasured and enjoyed time and time again. I guess that's why it's the hottest selling TV on DVD release on Amazon right now.
The last of the classic variety shows and one of the finest TV programs of all time, The Muppet Show Season 2 is an unrestrained delight from start to finish. This amazing production lit up the screens when it debuted in 1976 and the second season may be the best of the series' run. The sing-alongable theme song. The incredible guest stars. The crazy costumes. Pigs in space. The crabby guys in the balcony. The love / hate relationship between Piggy and Kermit. All here to relive or experience for the first time. If you are encountering The Muppet Show for the first time, what a treat you're in for; if you watched the show as a youngster you may find yourself uncontrollably singing along with the bizarrely choreographed Tin Pan Alley tunes. No question, this is Muppet-mania at its peak, before the many hit movies and Muppets on Ice diluted the product. How wonderful to see the delightful Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy and Miss Piggy trading barbs that could have come right out of radio. (In fact, some of the jokes do harken from Bergen's radio days.) There are priceless moments like Steve Martin in his early standup days performing the classic bits that made him a comedy superstar or catching Elton John, Cleo Laine and Lou Rawls at their peak. A pantheon of fabulous 1970's icons appear alongside the Muppets during the second season - Don Knotts, Teresa Brewer, Julie Andrews, Mia Farrow, John Cleese, Bernadette Peters, Dom Deluise, George Burns, and Bob Hope to name but a few. One of the many nice things about this show are the musical guests that actually sing live, they don't lip sync to recordings. There's an infectious level of spontaneity that runs throughout, you can't help but feel good watching the antics of these mad creations paired with some of the top talent of that or any other era. Of course, on this new DVD release everything looks and sounds great - the picture is crystal clear and the whole production looks and sounds like it was filmed yesterday. This show was a hit all over again in the 1980s thanks to reruns on cable; it always seems to appeal to teens across the generations. The Muppet Show is one of those TV programs that will endure forever (that's why they're reportedly filming a new version in 2007) and one you will want to add to your library. From gramps down to the toddlers, everyone will enjoy it. Something you can enjoy watching with your preschooler - how many TV shows can you say that about? The Muppet Show Season 2 comes in a beautifully designed package with all 24 episodes on 4 discs. You also get for the first time on DVD "The Muppets Valentine Day Special," the 1974 series pilot / special. |
