Mason - The Second Season Volume 2
The second season of Perry Mason was television noir at its peak in 1959. Dark and moody, Perry Mason is one of the few shows from the early days of TV that holds up, you don't feel embarrassed watching it. Often times the mysteries really are puzzling but, of course, while his clients make look guilty as hell, Perry Mason never loses a case. (Well, he lost one actually...) I quite enjoy watching the odd episode of Perry Mason, it reminds me of being very young - it was always on in reruns, the show the old folks watched back in the day. The interaction of the remarkable cast - Raymond Burr as Perry, Barbara Hale as his efficient secretary Della Street, William Hopper as private investigator Paul Drake, William Talman as D.A. Hamilton Burger, Ray Collins as dour Lt. Tragg - solidifies this show as a classic. That and the tightly woven plotlines; don't miss the way out jazz influenced episode with Frankie Laine and Bobby Troup. Barbara Hale as Della Street is especially enjoyable to watch - she was one of TV's few competent, witty women during that era. The fashions and decors are pure 1950s, from class to kitsch but, unfortunately, there wasn't as much location shooting as there was for the first season episodes. Perry Mason - The Second Season Vol. 2 gives you the last half of year 2, 15 episodes on 4 discs for less than $30.00 if you order online. Studio: Paramount Home Video Perry
Mason - Season One"The defense never rests as Volume 2 of the classic series Perry Mason returns to DVD with 20 more episodes from the groundbreaking first season!" I initially thought that this wouldn't be very good. I watched the show in reruns as a kid, but found it mostly boring. I'm loving it now. The mysteries are sometimes second rate while always well played out - but it's the pristine 1950's production values and plentiful location shooting (rare for TV in the '50s) that makes Perry Mason a joy to watch. The show spent a lot of time shooting on location in LA and around Southern California so it's like a 1950's era postcard come to life. That was a golden time for architecture in the Golden State. Comfort food for the brain.
The first season is split into two DVD collections. Highly recommended for those who love 1950's TV at its very best.
