Whisperer
From the product description: Ever since she was a young girl, Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) has been able to see and talk to dead people - earth bound spirits who have yet to cross over to the other side and who seek her help in communicating and resolving unfinished business with the living. Melinda sometimes has a hard time accepting her "gift," especially now that she's a newlywed and looking forward to starting her new life with her husband, Jim Clancy (David Conrad), a paramedic. Her friend and business partner in the antique store, Andrea Moreno (Aisha Tyler), is fascinated by Melinda's talent. Although Melinda embraces her unique "abilities" as a blessing and sometimes a curse, she always helps her clients--alive or dead--find emotional closure. Ghost Whisperer was a surprise hit of the 2005 season. At times cute as hell, sometimes too conveniently far out, Ghost Whisperer season 2 doesn't quite come up to the creepiness found in Carnivale or the first year of Lost but there is suspense and eerieness galore, a show that wins you over by keeping you guessing at every turn and not cheating you out of a chilling payoff. The first episode especially rocks as Melinda confronts the death of her partner and best friend, seen on the first season cliffhanger. Why isn't her friend Andrea coming to her as a spirit? When she finally does it propels her toward a spine-shuddering, emotional climax. After that resolution, our ghost whisperer starts moving into darker territory. Tension is created too often with tricks we've seen too many times like slamming doors, lights out in the shower, misty rooms, and people who suddenly pop out of nowhere, but it does all add up to an incredibly atmospheric portrait, a mesmerizing trip through a world of foreboding disaster. The special effects are simply fantastic. Happily, not seeing season one didn't lessen my enjoyment of year two at all; funny thing about this show, the more I watched the more I enjoyed it. Hewett is a winning actress, a jewel of an empath for viewers to latch on to. She's clean cut sexy and always in the moment but with spirits showing up at all hours of the day and night when does her character ever get any sleep?!? In episode two, Camryn Manheim is introduced as single mom Delia Banks, Melinda's new partner and she brings with her that marvelous, enveloping nature of hers. Manheim devours the screen, adding a welcome new dimension to the production. There were some weak episodes but all in all a fine season of extraordinary shows that most of the family can enjoy watching together, all but the youngest ones. If you're a devotee of Ghost Whisperer, and there are scores, you will definitely want to own this deluxe DVD collection. Fans will flip over the extras including commentaries and interviews.
