GEE MR. WILSON

I'm enjoying Dennis the Menace season 3 on DVD, it's the latest from SHOUT! Factory. I'm cool to this series, I watched it as a kid but never really liked it all that much. Then, as now, we watched dumb stuff just because it was on.

Dennis had a very successful run on CBS from 1959 - 1963, until star Jay North could no longer be a convincing little kid; what might be adorable in an eight year old wouldn't seem so cute coming from a fourteen year old.

But watching season 3 is a particular treat for a tragic reason. Joseph Kearns, who played Mr. (George) Wilson, passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage before the season ended. This shifted the focus to other supporting players, fortunately the supporting cast was filled with radio & TV personalities of long standing like Mary Wicks, Charles Lane, Robert B. Williams and others.

For instance in one storyline radio erstwhile Willard Waterman (The Great Gildersleeve) takes the part that would have been Mr. Wilson's. The addition of Gale Gordon to the cast for the last 6 episodes as the new Mr. (John) Wilson was also a welcome switch. Always liked that guy on the Lucy shows. Although Kearns is equally entertaining the repetition is what sours Dennis the Menace for me.

Sadly Joseph Kearns' unexpected demise meant Mrs. Wilson, played by the wonderful Sylvia Field, had to leave at the end of this season. She wasn't replaced until season 5, the last.

It's fun to luxuriate in something so archaic, most if not all of these episodes were directed by TV and film legend Charles Barton who directed Bud Abbott and Lou Costello meet Frankenstein for movie theaters and Amos 'n' Andy, Petticoat Junction, and The Munsters for TV - among many, many others.

This DVD collection stands in stark contrast to TV programs out there today. If you were considering a season of Dennis the Menace this would be the one to have, a bargain for around $20.00 on Amazon when you consider there are 38 episodes on 5 discs to enjoy.

DID YOU KNOW: The Mitchell's house was constructed between 1934 and 1935 for the movie Party Wire. It was later moved and became well-known as the home of the Stone family on The Donna Reed Show in 1958, before becoming the home of the Mitchell family in 1959.

Airing on CBS from ‘59-’63, Dennis the Menace is a TV series based on the popular and iconic Hank Ketcham comic strip of the same name. The show follows the lives of the Mitchell family – Henry, Alice, and their only child, Dennis. Dennis is an energetic, well meaning, but trouble prone boy and sometimes a mischievous child. He often tangles with peace-and-quiet-loving neighbor, George Wilson.
