Gary Unmarried: The Complete First Season
Amusing look at the recently divorced The recently released DVD set of the first season of the sitcom Gary Unmarried is a good example of a show to buy on DVD. I enjoyed the first season well enough last year but did not fully pick up on the theme of a man who had been married for 15 years dealing with a recent divorce until I watched numerous episodes together for this review. Jay Mohr, star of the phenomenal and unfairly cancelled Fox failedcom Action, does a great job as a typical well-meaning but bumbling and dense sitcom Dad. Mohr is simply very believable as a Joe six-pack who is content with his economic status and who feels that he is a good parent as long as his kids behave moderately well, get good grades, and avoid the emergency room. Much of the humor in Gary comes from Mohr facing challenges that include cooking for his 11 and 14 year-old kids, keeping the regularly changing visitation schedule straight, dealing with his resentment over moving out of his nice home with a Jacuzzi to his bare-bones bungalow, and trying to maintain a romance while meeting his kids and dealing with interference from his ex-wife. Perhaps the funniest episode in the season deals with the common divorce issue of competing over the kids. Ex-wife Allison buying tickets for the kids’ first concert triggers a war in which she and Gary ambush their offspring with many premature “firsts.” These include the first date, the first shave, and numerous other rites of passage. The resolution is surprisingly friendly. The Gary in me prevented watching what seemed to be great extra features on the DVD set. These included a blooper reel, a segment on a day on the set with Mohr, and discussions with Paula Marshall, who plays Allison, and Mohr’s other castmates.
