The IT Crowd : The Complete Second Season
Great Britcom for IT professionals and the users they hate
Having the second series, my people call them seasons, of the hilarious britcom “The IT Crowd” released a few months after the first series was an incredible treat. This set is available for pre-order and will be released on June 30.
At the risk of “TV Party” host Billy relinquishing me to the room behind the red door with Richmond the goth, I will run a little long with this review in an effort to convey just how exceptional this program is. I must start by commenting on the clever and entertaining computer-animated scenes that accompany the main menu of the disc; they really capture the spirit of the program.
The basic premise of “The IT Crowd” is that Roy and Moss are underappreciated “techie” slackers who service ignorant computer users at a large corporation. The fact that these 20-something “keyboard kids” work out of a dreary basement in an otherwise beautiful modern London skyscraper speaks loads regarding the esteem in which the company holds them.
Much of the humor comes as well from the ignorance and general uselessness of their technically challenged manager Jen who also has the same handicap of poor social skills as Roy and Moss. The closest example in American comedy is Rebecca the bar manager in “Cheers” who ultimately simply hung around literally crying in her bottled water.
Roy and Moss getting Jen to warn other managers that googling the word “Google” will break the Internet is one of the funnier moments of this season. A presentation that she makes in the third season about the Internet truly is milk shooting out of your nose hilarious.
The second season began with what may have been an unscripted death of the catchphrase “Have you tried turning it on and off again.” The somewhat dark Roy states in an early scene that he is sick of saying that expression.
Roy does continue his tradition of wearing techie-oriented t-shirts that have obscure sayings and videogame scenes. A t-shirt that says “I see dumb people” was one of my favorites. Another one said merely “meh,” which signifies indifference, was an additional good one.
The second season gets off to a rousing start with a “work outing” to “Gay: The Gay Musical” that includes the toe-tapping song “I Love Willies.” The review quotes on the poster for the musical really add to the humor of this episode.
A trip to the bathroom during the intermission of “Gay” leads to misadventures other than the kind that you might think for the heterosexual Roy and Moss. I will share that I once made the same mistake as Roy that led to having the bathroom door broken down in the show.
The “ripped from the headlines” episode involved Moss responding to what he thought was an ad for cooking lessons from a German cannibal who wanted Moss as the entrée. A very interesting feature on the making of that episode revealed that the social interaction between “Moss and the German” was also based closely on the true story.
“The Dinner Party” to which Jen invites Roy, Moss, and Richmond also involves unexpected mayhem and involves fall-on-the-floor humor regarding child molestation. It further reminds us of the danger of socializing with co-workers.
In addition to the feature on making the “German” episode, the DVD has an outtake feature that is interesting but lacks the clever adlibbing that I suspect occurs during filming. Seeing that the actor who plays Richmond has a very nice smile made up for the flaw.
However, the impish look of Roy portrayer Chris O’Dowd shows that the gears are turning in his head. I know as well from interviewing O’Dowd for the DVD of the first season that he is capable of incredibly funny raunchy humor. He has very interesting thoughts regarding both sheep and Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, who apparently has a stronger interest in horses.
Before I get banished behind the red door, I do want to encourage people to share their thoughts regarding this indescribably brilliant show as e-mail to tvdvdguy@gmail.com.
