The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse In 1987 CBS had a huge hit on Saturday mornings, Pee Wee's Playhouse. It was followed by The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse and the network noticed that, while ratings were so-so, more people were recording these shows and watching them later. That was due to hipster adults who wanted to enjoy these programs without getting up early on Saturdays, a new phenomenon because VCRs were just then becoming affordable to the general public. Frenetic and kinetic and just plain goofy, The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse is loud and way too boisterous at times but then this was created for 1980's kids. This satirical re-imagining was produced by Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Heavy Metal) and he assembled a crew, many of whom (John Kricfalusi and Bruce Timm to name two) would go on to revolutionize animated entertainment in the 1990s. It was The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse that paved the way for the modern crop of super-zany cartoons like Spongebob Squarepants and the like. This innovative cartoon series may have been crafted for children but it was also meant to appeal to all ages, with pop culture references mixed in with the bada boom cartoon madness. It succeeds mightily in that goal, although I think it played better as a product of its time than it does now. One episode I remember vividly contained a segment where the animators went back to the original Terrytoons cartoons and created a clip filled video set to the 'Mighty Mouse Boogie' tune cut by Rosemary Clooney(?) in the 1940s. It's a rocking, jazzy jam by itself and the cartoon result ('Animation Concerto') was one of the best music videos of the era, it undoubtedly introduced many a tyke to boogie woogie that's for sure. Characters from other 1940's Terrytoons cartoons turn up like Gandy Goose who is cryogenically unfrozen to join Mighty Mouse in the 1980s and Deputy Dawg who turns up in an episode. Don't miss the scene in 'The Littlest Tramp' where Mighty sniffs flower pedals which some people took as a cocaine reference (and the times being what they were it probably was). The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse is a blast from Saturdays past, this 3 DVD collections contains all the episodes from seasons one and two. Also included: 3 original Terrytoons cartoons and a look back at the production featuring interviews with many of the participants. TV on DVD Reviews: |
