Aficionados agree that the first season of The Outer Limits was the best - not that the second season was bad (some episodes were among the best) but season one was a phenomenal breakthrough in TV sci-fi drama. In fact, it can be said without fear of much contradiction that The Outer Limits was the finest science fiction series of the 20th century. It certainly was the creepiest, with bizarre special and make-up effects and truly horrifying storylines. After four decades The Outer Limits still packs a wallop, bouncing between the whimsical and the eerie in that way that TV can't seem to manage anymore leading the way for Star Trek, not to mention the successful Outer Limits revival in the 1990s. This collection represents the first 16 Outer Limits episodes (half the first season), the best according to many experts, with classics like 'The Galaxy Being,' the first episode and perhaps the best of the bunch; 'The Man Who Was Never Born' and 'The Architects of Fear' where Robert Culp is transformed into an alien to scare the population into peace. You'll discover phenomenal performances by the finest actors working in TV at the time including David McCallum, Martin Landau, Gary Merrill, Ed Nelson, Bruce Dern, Carroll O'Connor and many others. Because the Outer Limits never garnered any great ratings it was able to fly under the radar, presenting stories with a deeper meaning much in the way The Twilight Zone did. Not every episode hits the target but enough do that this collection is indispensable to fans of anthology dramas in general and sci-fi in particular. Sure, some of the monster getups are a little hokey to modern eyes but the superior writing and gut level portrayals more than compensate. This is the second time The Outer Limits has been released on DVD. Full season sets hit the stores several years ago but this half this half-season set is more affordable - a MSRP of $29.98 as opposed to $54.98 for the full season - of course, you pay a lot less when you order online but you knew that, right?. Is this the new trend, to release the full seasons and then years later break up the episodes into more affordable sets? There are no extras (why doesn't someone run out and at least interview Harlan Ellison for the season 2 collection?!?) and the episodes look a little grainy (it's digital compression) but that kind of thing doesn't bother me so much when watching black and white programs. Still, true fans will want to see an improved and expanded edition one day.
