The Simpsons: The Complete Twelfth Season All Hail King Snorky The DVD set of the 2000-2001 12th season of prime-time animated series “The Simpsons,” which arguably is the show on which the Fox network was built, is a good reminder of why this amusing commentary on pop culture and nuclear family life has lasted so long. I advise that anyone who disagrees get a sense of humor and not have a cow. The clever ways that Fox has packaged the DVD sets of the seasons deserve mention as well. Several sets are available in packaging in the form of the head of a Simpsons character, and the 12th season set comes in a box with a mural of a comic-con style gathering in honor of Comic Book Guy, who graces the front cover. The comic theme continues with the booklet that describes the episodes and the autograph line sequence on the main menu of each disc. My comment that I am eager to see what treat is planned for the DVD set for the 13th season should not set off a sarcasm detector. The show itself deserves strong credit for lasting as long as it has despite, as some episodes from the 12th season indicated, it has gotten a little tired. An example is perpetually 10-year-old Bart writing on the blackboard during the opening credits of an episode that no, he should not be 21 by now. The season starts with the annual eagerly anticipated “Treehouse of Horror” episode that offers three film parodies with a horror twist. Although a Treehouse episode from another season that has doughnuts failing as rain is one of my all-time favorites, the 12th season episode with the dolphin uprising is another excellent one. All hail King Snorky! Other strong episodes include a new area code dividing Springfield just before the rock band The Who comes to play a concert, religious zealot Ned Flanders keeping the memory of his late wife alive in an almost Norman Bates manner, and Homer performing degrading pranks for money. The New Kids on the Bleech episode deserves mention as well for parodying boy bands and armed forces recruiting efforts in typical Simpsons fashion. Like The Who, the members of ‘NSync join in on the fun with the proper spirit. However, Justin Timberlake does not put anything in a box. The DVD set deserves credit too for continuing to add special features to it. Two features consist of footage of behind-the-scenes presentations at A Global Fanfest event and American and foreign commercials with Simpsons characters that got me craving a Butterfingers candy bar. The bottom line is that this is a clever show with many subtleties and heavily edited syndicated episodes that make it a good one to buy. I regularly watch episodes from early seasons on Sunday nights to hold me over until Fox begins airing new ones. Please do share your thoughts regarding this show as e-mail to tvdvdguy@gmail.com.
