Comedy Central's TV Funhouse

TV Funhouse is a rich Vegas buffet of empty calories with enough obscure pop culture references for those of us who grew up on TV in the 1970s & '80s to savor, blended with a level of vulgarity that only an adolescent can fully appreciate.

This is an absurbist dive into tried and true TV conventions dating back to the 1950s; a mad half-hour cornucopia of puppets, warped public service spots, crazy cartoons, and revolting live action shorts hosted by Doug Dale as "Doug," a demented portrayal of the local kiddie hosts of old.

Robert Smigel's Bizarro-world send up of Saturday morning TV fare got it's start on Saturday Night Live. Not every segment works, not by a long shot, but there are so many brilliant moments packed into each episode that it hardly matters. Some of the most outlandish segments include a cartoon Dennis the Menace character that hates Jews; Stedman, Oprah's crime fighting fiancee; a fish taking a group of kids to a cookie factory; and Stranger Dan teaching children about safety.

Robert Goulet going on an Atlantic City bender with Triumph the Comic Insult Dog is pure comedy gold and watching Black Sabbath cast as 1970's cartoon characters will leave you on the floor.

So if you want to see a drugged-up George Washington get the VH1 Behind the Music treatment, Porn For Kids, Triumph in the delivery room, or the adorably unhinged anipals at a cockfight then this is the show for you.
